Manage Fine Types

A fine type is a category for defining why fines are applied and controls the amount of the fine and how the fine is calculated. Managing fine types includes adding, editing and deleting.

There are system-created fine types: Damaged, Lost and Overdue which you cannot edit or delete.

Calculating the Fine

If the fine is based on the cost of the resource, Destiny starts with either the replacement price or purchase price, depending on the setting in Back Office > Site Configuration > Circulation > Create fines using….

To add fine types:

  1. Select Circulation> Fines.
  2. In the Find Patron field, type a patron name or barcode, and then click Go. A list of patrons appears.
  3. Select the patron you want.
  4. To add a fine type, click Add Fine. The Add Fine page appears.
  5. Click the Reason drop-down.
  6. To add a new Fine Type, click Other…. The Manage Fine Types page appears.
  7. In the Fine Type field, type a descriptor for the fine type.
  8. Click the Copy Specific drop-down to select how you want to calculate the fine type.
    • Copy Specific fine types let you select either:
      • Fixed amount: Type an amount for the fine.
      • % of Cost: Type a percentage for the fine.
    • Patron Only fine types are only associated with a patron and not associated with a copy.
  9. Click Save.

To edit or delete fine types:

You can edit or delete fine types you have added to Destiny. System-created fines cannot be edited or deleted.

Important: Before you delete a fine type, reassign any active fines of the fine type you are going to delete to another fine type that has the same Copy Specific or Patron Only association.
  1. Select Circulation> Fines.
  2. In the Find Patron field, type a patron name or barcode, and then click Go. A list of patrons appears.
  3. Select the patron you want.
  4. To edit or delete a fine type, click Add Fine. The Add Fine page appears.
  5. Find the fine type you want to edit or delete.
    • To edit a fine type, find the fine type and click .
    • To delete a fine type, find the fine type and click .
  6. Click Save.
